What this does

A live count of words, characters, sentences and paragraphs — the numbers a commission, a school limit or a meta description actually cares about.

Common uses

  • Checking an article against an 800-word commission
  • Keeping a title tag under 60 characters
  • Counting a submission that has a paragraph limit

How counts are defined

The four numbers disagree with other tools unless you know the rules, so here they are:

CountRule
WordsRuns of non-whitespace characters. well-known is one word; well - known is three
CharactersEvery character, including spaces and line breaks
SentencesSplits on ., ! or ? followed by a space or end of text
ParagraphsBlocks separated by a blank line

Markdown syntax is counted as text: **bold** counts the asterisks too. Strip the markup first if you are counting a finished draft.

How it works

Counted in the browser on every keystroke. Nothing is sent anywhere — there is no request to inspect because there is no request.
